How is the Internet used in your discipline or field of study? How can the use of the Internet foster global communication, increase the potential for learning, link users with resources, and assist students with research?

The internet is used in various ways for Education. I know I have used it to look up lesson plans when I was participating in teaching some children music. I also used it to find out more about what Texas requires children to know at various grade levels. Another way I have used the internet in my field of study is to look up various games and ways to incorporate them in a classroom environment as well as to make them educational.

The internet allows people from different countries to come into contact with one another. Email messages can be written and sent from America to someone in Japan and will be received normally in a matter of minutes. It is easier to keep in touch with penpals this way.

Another way that the internet allows people from all over the world to communicate is through the use of instant messaging software. Programs such as AOL, Trillian, Gimp, Yahoo! Messenger all allow users to chat in 'real time' with one another. There is very little waiting involved, depending on how fast one responds.

The internet can be used in the matter of education as well. There are lots of resources out there that can be used for research papers, or simply just finding out a little bit more about a subject. Wikipedia is a good, if a bit uncertain, resources. One does have to be careful because wikis, like Wikipedia, can be modified by anyone. A better resource would be databases that are kept by organisations and schools. Articles from various magazines and newspapers can be found in these databases and some can be accessed without paying any fees. Some sites may not offer any information themselves, but may point one to another site that has accurate information that can be easily accessed.
